British dancer and choreographer born in Guayaquil, Ecuador on September 17, 1904 as Frederick William Mallandaine Ashton. His notable works include Cinderella (1970), The Tales of Hoffmann (1951), The Turning Point (1977), and The Tales of Beatrix Potter (1971). He is the...Read more founding father of British Ballet, and he developed the English classical style of dance. He studied in London with Léonide Massine and Marie Rambert. He joined the Vic-Wells Ballet, which later became the Royal London Ballet and became its director. At the beginning of the fifties, he was a choreographer for films, while retaining his role in the Royal Ballet. He produced many famous operas as a dancer and choreographer. He received numerous British, French and Danish awards and honors. He died in Sussex, England, on August 18, 1988, at the age of 83.
