He was also a composer, pianist and singer. He married actress Leah Waggner (1949-2015), they had four children, and she stayed with him until her death. Among his notable works are Hour of the Gun (1967), In The Heat of the Night (1967) and Pillow Talk (1959). He died in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, California, USA on May 8, 2016, at age 93.
