An American prolific film and television actor, born in Los Angeles, California, USA as William Joseph Schallert. He was a fighter pilot in the US Air Force during World War II, and got interested in acting while at the University of California, Los Angeles. After graduating in 1946, he helped found the Circle Theatre, and the following year, he worked in films, followed by television. He was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in 1980. He was also a composer, pianist and singer. He married actress Leah Waggner (1949-2015), they had four children, and she stayed with him until her death. Among his notable works are Hour of the Gun (1967), In The Heat of the Night (1967) and Pillow Talk (1959). He died in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, California, USA on May 8, 2016, at age 93.
