He joined the US Army to become a pilot in the army but failed to pass flight school. He worked in different professions until he worked on a farm where he got to know who led him to work in cinema. He became a star and kept working profusely in cinema and television until he was over 90 years. His works include The Searchers (1956), Runaway Train (1985), Red River (1948), and The Alamo (1960). He died in Los Angeles, California, USA, on December 6, 1992.
