An American character actor, born in St. Edward, Nebraska, USA, on November 25, 1901, as John Taylor Mapes. He married Ruth Ensign (1931-1984) and she remained with him until his death. He is known for The Monster and the Ape (1945), Daughter of Don Q (1946), and Night Passage...Read more (1957). At the age of twenty, he traveled to California, where he worked as a transporter of luggage and equipment for John Barrymore, which allowed him to work as a grip in The Taming of the Shrew (1929). Later on, he started participating in many works as a stuntman and then as an actor. After retiring in 1969, he worked as an observer on sets for the American Humane Society. He died in Burbank, California, USA, on September 9, 1984.
