The highest spiritual leader of the Tibetan people and a former head of state of Tibet. He was born on July 6, 1935, in Taktser, China. In a public statement made in 1939, he was officially acknowledged as the 14th Dalai Lama. In 1959, the year China invaded Tibet, he earned his doctorate in Buddhist philosophy. He then fled to Dharamsala, India, where he has since served as the leader of the Tibetan government in exile. He is the leader and head monk of the Gelug school, the most recent branch of Tibetan Buddhism. In 2011, he stepped down as a political leader. He appeared in Tao of Peace (2010), Wheel of Time (2003), and Dancing in Amdo (2008).
