A German-American actress, born in Pirmasens, German Empire, on March 10, 1905, as Philippine Amann, to American parents. Betty Amann was raised in the USA, where she studied painting at the National Academy School of Fine Arts in New York. She received the Honorary Award at the...Read more German Film Awards in 1987 for her outstanding contributions to German film over the years. She married David B. Stillman (1938-1963), and he remained with her until his death. Among her most important works are Hubby's Weekend Trip (1928), Strictly Business (1931), Asphalt (1929), and Isle of Forgotten Sins (1943). She started her career by playing small parts in the theater before making her screen debut in the silent movie The Kick-Off (1926), in which she was credited as Bee Amann, and after that, she appeared in 7 Mack Sennett short comedies, then she traveled to Germany, where she appeared in her first German film, Asphalt (1929), in which she was the female lead, and was given the name Betty. She appeared in several German films, then went to Poland in 1930 and participated in her last silent film. Betty continued to present German, British, and French films, and in 1933, when the Nazis rose to power, she immigrated to England because she was Jewish, and when she did not find a place for her as an actress, she returned to Germany and presented German films until 1938, when she got married, then immigrated for the last time to America. She continued her cinematic work in American films until 1943. Betty Amann died at the age of 85 in Westport, Connecticut, USA, on August 3, 1990, of Alzheimer's disease.
