A Danish actor, born in Copenhagen, Denmark, as Rasmus Carl Therkelsen Gottlieb. He was nicknamed "The Great Dane". He had a rough childhood, as his father was an alcoholic and his parents separated at an early age. He worked for a while as a mechanic, carpenter, and several other professions. He moved to the United States in 1910, and there, he began his acting career. He is known for The Big Parade (1925) and La Bohème (1926). In 1960, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He committed suicide by gunshot on April 14, 1934, in Los Angeles, California, USA.
