An American actor, musician, singer, composer and rodeo performer, born in Tioga, Texas, USA as Orvon Grover Autry. He received many awards and honors, most notably 5 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 for his activities on radio, television, cinema and records, and in...Read more 1987 for his live theatrical performance. He largely gained fame by crooning on radio, film, and television for more than 3 decades, beginning in the early 1930s, and was the owner of a television station, several radio stations in Southern California, and a baseball team in Los Angeles. He made more than 640 recordings, wrote 300 of them, and his recordings sold one hundred million copies. Most of his films were low-budget Westerns. Autry served in the US Air Force during World War I and owned a cattle ranch. He retired from acting in the early 1960s and became a millionaire from his various investments. He was married twice and had no children. Among his notable works are The Big Show (1936), The Phantom Empire (1935) and Ridin' on a Rainbow (1941). He died of lymphoma in Studio City, Los Angeles, California, USA, on October 2, 1998, at the age of 91.
