An American actor, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. He was married twice and had no children. He taught English for three years after earning both a bachelor's and a master's degree from the University of Cincinnati. After working in local theaters, he debuted on...Read more Broadway in 1929 and remained there until 1943. In 1937, he began making movie appearances. During World War II, he was inducted into the Air Force, which briefly disrupted his career. However, he returned to his work in television and movies after the war. Some of his most notable works include The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), The Night of the Hunter (1955), Cyrano de Bergerac (1950), and The Narrow Margin (1952). He passed away in Laguna Hills, California, United States, on January 19, 1991, at the age of 87.
