He was the son of a construction consulting engineer, and he came to America with his family at an early age, settling in Northern California. He was a skilled horseman, played polo competitively, and he worked for a while in a steel mill, which was the source of his stage name "Steele". During the Depression, he moved to Hollywood to become an actor and stunt performer. He died in Los Angeles, California, USA, on October 30, 1990, at the age of 81.
