His notable credits include Same Time, Next Year (1978), for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, and Tribute (1980). He married actress Jill Foster. They had two children, Laurie Newbound and Christopher Newbound, and he remained with her until her death. Slade was the grandfather of actress Emma Friedman. He died of Lewy body dementia on October 30, 2019, in Beverly Hills, California, USA.
