A Canadian playwright, screenwriter, and actor, born in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. As a child, he moved with his family to England, where he started his career as an actor in repertory theater. Later on, he returned to Canada and continued his acting career. After moving to Hollywood, Slade began working as a sitcom writer.
He made his writing debut in the series On Camera in 1957 and concluded his career with the TV movie Un drôle de père in 2014. His notable credits include Same Time, Next Year (1978), for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, and Tribute (1980). He married actress Jill Foster. They had two children, Laurie Newbound and Christopher Newbound, and he remained with her until her death. Slade was the grandfather of actress Emma Friedman. He died of Lewy body dementia on October 30, 2019, in Beverly Hills, California, USA.
