Now that he's married to the much younger Gloria, Jay tries to become acclimatized to his new life with her, while Claire tries to handle the behavior of her kids, and Mitchell and his partner, Cameron, try to keep the fact that they have adopted a baby secret from Mitchell's family.

Phil decides to steal his son's bicycle in order to teach him a valuable lesson; however, he ends up stealing someone else's bicycle. Jay wants to get closer to Manny, his stepson. Cameron and Mitchell attempt to appear as heterosexuals as they take Lily to a playgroup.

Things take an unexpected turn when Phil joins Jay while he is trying to play with his model airplane. As Gloria and Alex go shopping, Gloria attempts to talk Alex into getting a dress. Claire faces the reality of her being Manny's sister.

After causing embarrassment to Jay and Gloria at their wedding months earlier, Jay's former wife pays the family a visit. Claire and Phil contemplate whether they trust Haley's boyfriend enough to let him take her to a concert.

After Manny and Luke quarrel at school, things get out of hand, leading to a squabble between Gloria and Claire as the family gets together to watch a football match.

On the first day of school, Jay and Gloria have a squabble about what Manny would wear. Claire and Phil fail to agree on what to do while the children are at school. An insignificant incident that happens to Lily causes Mitchell and Cameron to flip.

The family supports Manny when he becomes interested in fencing, at which he turns out to be very good; however, Jay's pride in Manny causes Mitchell to confront a trauma from his childhood.

On Claire and Phil's anniversary, Jay's grandchildren are to sleep over at his house, while Claire seeks to buy the best present possible for Phil. Mitchell and Cameron find out a startling fact about a friend of theirs.

At Luke's birthday bash, Cameron puts on his clown costume to make the bash more fun, but things don't go as planned, causing the family to go to the ER.

As their children get into mischief, Claire and Phil decide not to allow them to celebrate Christmas if they don't own up to what they did, while Lily is taken by Cameron and Mitchell to see Santa for the first time.

Javier, Manny's father, comes for a visit. An issue regarding Lily causes Cameron and Mitchell to have an argument. As he is in pain due to a kidney stone, Phil is taken to the hospital.

With Gloria annoyed by Jay's dog butler statue, she hatches a plan to dispose of it. Claire wants to punish Luke as she believes that some nude photos are his when, in fact, they are Phil's. Mitchell gets mad about Cameron's excessive kindness.

Mitchell tries to mess with Jay, telling him that his friend is gay. Claire struggles to figure out how to use the master remote control. Manny goes out on a date.

After meeting an old friend, Claire feels bad about herself. As Jay and Cameron go to the gym, they end up feeling uncomfortable. Gloria seeks legal counseling from Mitchell after she gets into an automobile accident.

On Valentine's Day, Claire and Phil go on a romantic vacation in an attempt to jazz up their relationship. Manny receives help from Mitchell and Cameron. Jay decides to attend a stand-up comedy show with Gloria.

For the third time, Haley tries to pass her driver's test. Phil and Luke set out to search for a treasure beneath the house. Gloria provokes Jay and Manny into riding a roller coaster to get Manny to overcome his phobia.

As a former girlfriend of Phil's shows up, Claire finds herself overcome with jealousy. After killing Manny's turtle by mistake, Jay starts lying about what has done. Mitchell speaks frankly with his boss.

As Jay and Mitchell try to get closer to one another, things don't turn out as they had hoped. Cameron plans to spend some quality time with Gloria. With Haley and Luke having projects that are due the next day at school, Claire and Phil attempt to help them.

Claire tries to get her husband, who's obsessed with technology, the perfect gift for his birthday. Cameron finds himself forced to meddle in the affairs of a neighbor. Gloria and Manny decide to hide how good they are at chess in order to indulge Jay.

As Jay and Phil both seek to coach Manny and Luke's basketball team, they are forced to compete against each other. Mitchell and Cameron end up destroying the car of Mitchell's new boss by accident. Claire and Gloria realize that their children aren't little anymore.

When her father-in-law shows up unexpectedly, Claire grows suspicious. A horror film causes Manny to experience trauma. Cameron seeks to be a member of Dylan's band, which needs a new drummer.

For Jay's birthday, Gloria decides to gift him with a trip to Hawaii, but their romantic getaway ends up turning into a trip for the whole family, much to Jay's disappointment.

Jay attempts to kick back in Hawaii; however, things don't go as planned. Phil endeavors to make Claire enjoy the trip, and Mitchell and Cameron fail to agree on the attractions they should go see, while the children are left unattended.

Claire tries hard to have a portrait taken of the family. As Gloria and Phil accompany Manny and Alex to a basketball game, they find themselves in an awkward situation. Cameron gets a gig to sing at a wedding. For his school project, Luke seeks Jay's help.
