As Max gets ready for college, she goes with Sam to Chicago. Both Sam and Duke see the ghost of Sam's deceased father. Sam helps Frankie with her school's play homework.

While filming a movie, Sam meets the talent manager, Mer Kodis. Max wants to have her own apartment off-campus. When she attends a parent-child day, Sam tries to get back at a parent whose son bullied Duke.

Sam invites her friends over for dinner. She is worried about her mother's deteriorating mental condition, and her brother Marion suggests they put her in a nursing home.

Sam has a nightmare involving her ex-husband, and she is upset when Max returns early from college. Sam quarrels with the director over safety measures while filming her stunts. Mer is romantically interested in Max.

Sam is injured while go-karting with the girls. Following a birthday party, Sam goes to her doctor after feeling unwell, and she lets out all her frustrations; the doctor advises her to see a psychotherapist.

Sam talks about her anxiety during her therapy sessions with Dr. Miller, and she goes to meet her ex-husband Xander in his hotel room. Following a little accident, Phil decides to give her car to Marion.

Sam has a colonoscopy and the doctor tells her that her tests are negative. Dr. Miller decides to end his sessions with Sam because of their old history.

On Easter, Sam has fun with Duke and Frankie, while Phil goes to her married boyfriend Walter's home and spends time with his wife, who has Alzheimer's.

Upon Mer's suggestion, Sam goes to New York to perform a play, and she clashes with her manager Tressa for not getting her good offers. Sam continues to rebuff Mer's romantic gestures.

When Sam has a girls' night at Lala's house, she gets annoyed when Lala's husband shows up and ruins the night for them. Sam tries to help Duke who still sees visions of her grandfather Murray.

Sam brings a medium to try to get rid of Murray's presence. Sam fights with Max when she finds her weed smoking pipe in the house, and she takes Frankie to a poetry slam event.

On Sam's 50th birthday, Frankie decides to leave home, and Sam quarrels with Rich but they make amends. The family attends Frankie's recital, and Max and Duke give Sam a cake.
