When Uhtred learns that the Scottish invasions have damaged Bebbanburg's defenses, he decides to take his birthright, but Edward declines to assist.

The prodigal son Wihtgar returns with some cunning plans as Uhtred and his army approach Bebbanburg. On the other hand, Uhtred is troubled by the news of treason.

With his attack on Bebbanburg, Uhtred incurs a heavy defeat. As Uhtred captures some precious hostages and flees to the south, Aethelflaed gets ready for battle.

In an effort to defeat Cnut's army of 1,000 warriors at the Battle of Tettenhall, Aethelflaed and Uhtred team up with the Welsh ruler Hywel in the hopes that Edward's soldiers will join them.

Aethelred expresses regret as he dangles on the verge of death. As Ealdormen of Mercia contend for dominance of the terrain, Aelfwynn, Edward's niece, serves as a negotiating tool.

Uhtred's company is being pursued by Eardwulf and his soldiers as they run across a disease-ravaged region. Rising hostilities exist between Edward and the Mercians.

Aelfwynn is afflicted by the illness that is roiling the region. As Edward offers Mercia an unusual way to proceed, Sigtryggr, a relative of Cnut, lands in Wales.

Uhtred grudgingly gets ready to take over Mercia, and yet he already has a backup plan. Brida attacks the Welsh alongside the Danes.

The Danes are led to Winchester by Brida and Sigtryggr under the supervision of the traitor Eardwulf. Uhtred's group is ambushed by Haesten, who captures important hostages.

Edward starts attacking Winchester as he is waiting for Aethelflaed's troops. As Uhtred isn't really sure that Sigtryggr's ultimate goal is conquering, Stiorra aspires to go on her own way.
