In December 2005, Medrar for Contemporary Art inaugurated a video art festival at the heart of Cairo. A collective of visual artists passionate about video art organized the showcase, focusing on recent self-produced or low-cost works. With the same pressing spirit of self-organizing and continuing the dialogue, the Cairo Video Festival returns with an international display of video art and experimental film organized by Medrar from the 1st to the 17th of December, 2024.
Works this year were nominated and selected by the festival’s team as well as the programming committee: Mohamed Allam, Ismail Fayed, Nadine Khan, and Mena El Shazly. The publication contains textual inputs by Alia Ayman, Rania Lee Khalil, Mariam El Nozahy, and Jalal Toufic.
In the 11th edition, five programs underscore issues of borderlines, gaps, landscapes, and displacement. The mutated locust integrated into the digital landscapes, consuming not only crops but also data. A landscape of leftover electronic equipment, a combination of real and fiction with the machine, the body as material, and its representation in open space, among other artistic expressions, constitute this edition. A common thematic thread is the construction of the digital image and the digital image as a construct itself.
