American actor, born in Portland, Indiana, USA on January 20, 1902. He married actress Christine Gossett (1938-1993), with whom he got two children and remained with her until his death. He is best known for Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970), and Meet Me in...Read more St. Louis (1944). He was determined to become an actor and struggled a lot to reach his goal. He worked in amateur theater as a maintenance worker and worked in selling shoes until 1932. Afterwards, he managed to stand on the Broadway stage and made his first film role in the movie Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932). Then, he presented many diverse films with many companies until he achieved his dream and signed a contract with MGM to present many successful films until the mid-eighties. He was one of the founders of the Film Guild of America, headed it in 1957, and held several positions at the American Academy of Arts. He died on October 12, 1993 (age 91) in Laguna Beach, California, USA.
