An Austrian writer, born in Vienna, Austria. He was one of the most prominent European writers at the beginning of the last century. He wrote many plays, novels, and articles, and his autobiographical work, The World of Yesterday, was published after his suicide. He has lived on the move in South America since 1940. Among his well-known novels are Twenty-Four Hours in the Life of a Woman, Beware of Pity, and Amok. He decided to get rid of life while he was witnessing the collapse of world peace and the scourges of World War II.
