He was born in London, England, to George Kirby, a clerk for a shipping company and Francis Grace. His parents separated when he was young, and he lived with his stepfather, Ronald Gardner, who used to work as a driver. He fell in love with acting since he was young when he saw a child acting in an advertisement. He joined the Italian Conti School of Dramatic Acting at the age of 14, after participating in several films as a child actor, and in 1948, he participated in a heroic role in the movie Oliver Twist (1948). He continued his cinematic works until he was called up in the early fifties to serve in the army, and after a discharge from the army, he continued his cinematic activity in various roles and participated in television programs as a child actor and musician. He began to be known as a singer and composer, and in the late fifties, he became famous for the song Idol on Parade, which he sang in a movie of the same name in 1959. He began to present many innovative musical works in the United Kingdom. From 1959 to 1962, he moved to musical plays, where he presented many successful works, and in 1966, he presented a theatrical show entitled Stop the World: I Want to Get Off (1966), which had long tours in London and Broadway and was adapted into a movie.
