She moved to Memphis and worked for an insurance company while working as a singer on local radio, and after another unhappy marriage, she went to Louisville, Kentucky and became a popular singer at the local radio station where she worked as a secretary. She worked on Radio Dallas as a singer. She signed a contract with 20th Century Fox and appeared in a small role in the film Orchestra Wives (1942).
