He presented a number of theatrical productions until he stood on Broadway, and performed hundreds of plays until the 1940s. His first film was Pie in the Sky 1935. His major works: Miss Sadie Thompson (1953), Bad Day at Black Rock (1955), Fail Safe (1964) and The Enemy Below (1957). He died in 1965 of a heart attack at the age of 68.
