As Dr. Max Goodwin starts his new job as the medical director of New Amsterdam, his first day is rife with complications as he takes drastic actions to improve the hospital, and deals with the demands of the heads of departments.

As Max receives a shocking medical diagnosis, he shoves it to the side in favor of focusing on his work and his wife's at-risk pregnancy. Dr. Bloom confronts Dr. Reynolds about his reluctance to commit to a relationship with her.

Max faces opposition from Dr. Fulton as he tries to make his vision for the hospital come true. As Dr. Bloom treats a pregnant prisoner, Max steps in with an unusual solution to the patient's dilemma.

New Amsterdam picks up the slack when a medical emergency renders another hospital unable to accept patients, leaving the staff scrambling to organize the ED in the face of an influx of patients.

As the doctors struggle to balance their own personal issues and their professional duties, a journalist arrives in New Amsterdam and witnesses the efforts to save two boys with gunshot wounds.

With the hospital's annual fundraising gala upon them, the personal and professional lives of the doctors intersect as their families arrive to join them, all while Max gears up to secure much-needed donations for the hospital.

As Max confronts the reality of his diagnosis, a multi-patient domino transplant surgery threatens to be forestalled as one of the patients pulls out.

As Max gets personal with a patient, he makes an unexpected decision about his treatment plan. Dr. Kapoor and Dr. Frome team up to help a patient after her mother interferes with her treatment.

A case hits too close to home for Max. Dr. Bloom's errors in the ER put her job on the line. Dr. Sharpe honors Max's wishes to join a clinical trial rather than undergo traditional therapy.

As Max's life hangs on the line, Dr. Bloom comes clean about how much she has been struggling with the workload. The doctors band together to enable Max to retain his job while receiving treatment.

As Max struggles to deal with the effects of his chemotherapy, the past comes calling for Reynolds. Max comes up with an unusual solution to help a frequent-flyer patient.

The hospital is shaken when Dr. Frome casts doubt on the ability of a veteran surgeon to continue performing surgery. Dr. Sharpe finds it hard to deal with Dr. Bloom in light of the latter's addiction.

Bloom is forced to confront her troubled past. Max tries to figure out a way to shuffle personnel from one department to another to improve the hospital.

While treating a baby who is in withdrawal, Sharpe considers making a big decision that could turn her life around. Max pours all his effort into the attempt to save Dr. Fulton's job.

Max struggles to fit in with the fellow patients in his chemo group. With the Pope visiting New Amsterdam, two doctors end up in trouble after a misunderstanding makes it seem like they are threatening the Pope.

When an accident impedes ambulances from reaching the hospital, the staff is forced to trek out into a vicious storm to get to the injured patients.

With the power out due to the storm, the doctors have to get creative to save their patients as the power outage creates a myriad of problems within the hospital.

Max's new oncologist whips him into shape when she realizes how spotty his treatment track record is. Max and Frome team up to resolve a tricky surrogacy case.

As the hospital receives an injured NYPD officer, they have to divide their resources between her and the driver who struck her. Max comes across some complications over the course of his treatment.

As Max is pushed to the brink when he receives unwelcome news about his treatment, he ends up accidentally taking it out on Reynolds during a review of a case. Dr. Frome's methods are brought into question by a social worker.

As Max comes up with a plan to help uninsured patients, his condition continues to deteriorate after the double dose of chemo. Dr. Frome is forced to reevaluate his overt involvement with his patients.

As Georgia's life hangs on the line, the doctors race against time to save her. Reynolds's plans for his and Evie's future are challenged by his mother.
